I love my guitar lessons with Ry! He's an amazing instructor and has had a major impact on helping me to develop into an intermediate guitarist.
His patience and encouragement continues to keep me motivated, and his passion for the guitar and making music is contagious!
- G. Kearney
I started taking lessons from Ry several years ago, and I've found it very rewarding. I've been messing with the guitar off and on for years, but never had any instruction. A few years ago, I discovered blues jams in the Bay Area and started playing in some and quickly realized I needed to learn some things.
Everything that I've wanted to learn about, he's been able to help me with. He's taught me some essential technical things that I'd not really discovered on my own which have helped a lot. He's transcribed what I think of as complicated leads for me spur of the moment -- leads that weren't published, but that I really liked (think pre-Perry Journey). Any music theory question that comes up, from modes to rhythms, he has been able to explain to me in a way that is understandable. He has composed many exercises to practice various types of licks, but it turns out his exercises are neat little songs in and of themselves. And... he's an awesome guitar player! I feel I've been lucky to find him as a teacher.

After studying privately with Joe Satriani while still in high school, Ry went on to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston with a focus on jazz and fusion, after hearing players like John Scofield, Pat Metheney, and George Benson. Eventually Ry moved back to California where he graduated from California Institute of the Arts with a BFA in Jazz Guitar Performance. While at CalArts, Ry had the opportunity to work with a diverse group of world class teachers including Charlie Haden, Larry Koonse, and Miroslav Tadic, and David Roitstein.
Ry has performed with major rock artists such as Eddie Money, Joe Satriani, Billy Idol, The Greg Kihn Band, Carabao (Thailand), and many others. He also was the house guitarist on his dad’s KFOX morning radio show for over 10 years, where he jammed with celebrity musical guests on a regular basis. He has toured worldwide with various acts in Europe and Asia.
Ry is also a sought-after studio musician and has recorded at some the top studios working with world renown producers.
He continues to play and teach privately based in the SF Bay Area and remote worldwide.
